Parks

Edition Topos

Public parks are among the most important open spaces in our cities and contribute decisively to their character.

Description

They fulfil ecological, social and urban design requirements, and upgrade adjacent neightbourhoods an even whole city districts. New parks are being built all over Europe, in the hearts of cities or out in the periphery, as in the case of Invalidenpark in Berlin and Thames Barrier Park in London, respectively. Some, such as Park André-Citroen, Paris, serve purely recreational purposes. Others, namely the sculpture garden of the Kröller-Müller Museum Park in the Netherlands, are devoted to art or to botanic abundance, as the Botanical Gardens in Barcelona. The creation of such extensive new green*spaces is always the subjekt of public and professional discourse, no matter whether this concerns La Villette in Paris, Duisburg-Nord Landscape Park in the Ruhr, or the new park at Munich´s old airport in Riem: Accordingly, the compact survey is rounded off by theoretical discussion. Based on essays published in "Topos - European Landscape Magazine" between 1993 and today, the resulting collection of familiar and less-known parks from many European countries provides an excellent overview of curent approaches to parks an park design.

Vakre veger

Edition Topos / Statens Vegvesen Norge (ed.)

Traffic infrastructure plays an important role in Norway. Stretching from Kristiansand to the North Cape, the country extends more than 2,000 kilometres from north to south.

Description

Roads, tunnels and bridges negotiate mountains and fjords cutting deep into the land. Long winters with heavy snow call for extensive avalanche protection. For the last two decades the Norwegian Public Roads Administration has devoted extensive efforts to constructing roads that are not only technically perfect, but also include the surrounding landscape in road planning and design. Roads and bridges are therefore also designed according to aesthetic aspects and adapted to the cultural landscape. This book presents exemplary planning and projects from all of Norway´s provinces. The essays provide an account of the history of road building and point out the increasing importance of the mountain and coastal roads for tourism.

About Landscape

Edition Topos

Essays on design, style, time and space One of the fundamental considerations in landscape architecture is whether to create something, which appears to be natural, or to design something deliberately artificial.

Description

Always moving between nature and artifice the art of landscape architecture expresses itself in a sensitive awareness of time and place. If the design is not to become a mere ornament, then it must be supported by concepts and visions, daring to create something new from the existing surroundings. This collection of essays, which have been published over the last decade in Topos - European Landscape Magazine, is a valuable contribution to the literature in the specialised field of landscape architecture. The authors include Paolo Bürgi who writes on dimensions of memory, Christophe Girot who makes reflections towards a general theory of landscape, and Kathinka Schreiber who takes a critical look at landscape in film.

Landscape Architecture

Edition Topos / Rainer Schmidt

The german landscape architect Rainer Schmidt recently attracted attention for his design concept for the National Garden Exhibition 2005 in Munich.

Description

Repeated success in winning competitions, above all in China, also brought him international recognition. The current issue of Edition Topos shows a synopsis of his projects for the first time. His work is marked by a thirst for variety and contrast. Rainer Schmidt reveals his design philosophy in an introductory essay. He makes a case for a romantic attitude towards designing in order to create landscapes with sensual and usable spaces which go beyond function and decoration. His strong belief in architectural forms is stressed in the chapter "Architectural Landscapes" with such projects as the grounds for the Infineon company in Munich, or in planning for the International Congress Center at the Parliament Building in Bonn. In addition to the design for the National Garden Exhibition 2005 in Munich, the book presents "Event Landscapes" such as plans for the Olympics in Beijing or the sports complex for the Asian Games in Qatar. The project overview is completed by "Urban Landscapes" such as the Munich Park City in Schwabing, the new center for the Chinese city Cixi, or the public park in the Lefortovo-Quarter in Moscow, and "Airport Landscapes" such as planning for the Munich and Frankfurt airports.

Landscape architecture in Scandinavia

Edition Topos

Squares, parks, places and cemeteries: quality landscape architecture in Scandinavia Just as modern Scandinavian architecture captivates with its elegance and high quality so too does its landscape architecture.

Description

During the last century Danish and Swedish landscape architecture was amongst the European avantgarde, and in more recent years, the development in Scandinavia along with Spain, the Netherlands and France has captured our interest once again. A new generation of designers has been responsible for creating landscape architectures which met with international praise, and the names Snøhetta, Thorbjörn Andersson, Stig L. Andersson, Steen Høyer und Preben Skaarup are now known far beyond the borders of Scandinavia. Featuring examples from Topos which include the harbour area in Copenhagen, new squares in Bergen, the redesigning of the railway station area in Jordro/Haninge, and avalanche protection in Iceland, this volume provides an overview of Scandinavia´s contribution to the design of new parks, squares and landscapes. callwey verlag/birkhäuser, münchen/basel 2002

The Netherlands in Focus

Edition Topos

New ideas and concepts for urban architecture and landscape architecture from the Netherlands: this survey takes stock of the current situation.

Description

In any discussion on contemporary landscape architecture, visionary urban development or revolutionary building, it is impossible to overlook the Netherlands. The experts look to this small, flat country which constantly seeks to exceed its narrow boundaries by creating new space. The Netherlands is crowded and so it is hardly surprising that architects endeavour to "stack" landscapes and functions as the Dutch pavilion in the Expo 2000, designed by MVRDV demonstrated. Here, new ideas and concepts in architecture and landscape design fall on the fertile ground. Rem Koolhaas had prepared the way: nothing must stay as it is, even the open countryside and the towns can be changed, moulded, shaped. The Dutch are experts at building in the sea, on polders, on man-made islands, and on former harbour areas as in Rotterdam Kop van Zuid. Architecture and landscape architecture are not only a matter of public interest but they are ongoing processes in the Netherlands, and this is reflected in many of the projects in this book which include the gardens and squares of West 8, the Museumsplein in Amsterdam, the town planning in Zutphen or Apeldoorn. The examples have all been published in different contexts in Topos, but this is the first time that they have been collated to provide an illuminating overview of contemporary Dutch landscape architecture.
